Danko Radio to help replace lost regional radio programs
After shutting down its regional production studios, the Media Services and Asset Management Fund (MTVA), the body in charge of managing public media, has announced an effort to replace the programs with a new radio station, called Danko Radio, which broadcasts to the residents of the Hungarian countryside. The new station, which is to begin broadcasting right before Christmas, will reportedly specialize in “mulatós zene” – a folksy form of pop music and wedding songs.
The Association of Hungarian Journalists (MÚOSZ) expressed their disagreement earlier with the idea of closing regional radio programming and studios. MÚOSZ said that the standard approach within the European Union is to develop more regional studios instead of closing them down. MÚOSZ alerted the European Commission, the OSCE and Circom Regional about this latest move, which they say erodes the value of the broadcast and further increases centralization of Hungarian public media.
