Position Description
The primary function of the Director of Research is to support the Center for Media and Communication Studies and its Director by managing and developing the Center’s research mission. CMCS is the leading center of research on media, communication, and information policy in Central and Eastern Europe. Based in the School of Public Policy at Central European University, we produce scholarly and practice-oriented research addressing academic, policy and civil society needs. CMCS has an existing portfolio of research projects, funded by private foundations and public scientific agencies from around the world. The Director of Research will (1) manage our existing portfolio of research projects (2) develop new proposals for externally funded research and (3) implement the Center’s research dissemination strategy. 

Tasks and Responsibilities
Research Management. The Director of Research will report to the Director of the Center and be responsible for the day-to-day management of research projects. The Director of Research will manage the relationships and work load of CMCS Fellows and temporary research hires who are working on specific research deliverables. Resources permitting, the Director of Research may have the assistance of part-time, temporary staff. The Director of Research will be responsible for both an annual report and regular updates on the Center’s research activities. The Director of Research will contribute to the process of selecting fellows, watching for opportunities to bring lecturers into speak to the Center’s community, and recruiting visiting faculty, post-docs, and new fellows. 

Development Strategy. The Director of Research will develop a funding strategy for the Center. This involves identifying external funders who might support Center work, cultivating relationships with potential supporters, developing a long term grant submission strategy and coordinating the application processes. The Director of Research will identify grant deadlines for the months ahead and once good targets have been identified, implement a management plan for preparing budgets, filing applications, and doing the other coordination tasks needed to meet deadlines. This work also involves contributing to the formation of grant proposals by drafting applications, advising on hiring, contract writing, deliverable timing, project organization, and staffing roles. Priority will be given to grants that support the research interests of Center faculty and staff, the summer school, and grants for which the Center is the primary and operational lead. 

Research Dissemination. The Director of Research will develop and conduct a long term dissemination strategy. The Director of Research may be called upon to represent the Center at international conferences, cultivate the local and extended research network of the Center, and develop their own research agenda.  The dissemination strategy will undoubtedly involve some sophisticated use of digital media, so comfort with social media, blogging platforms, and online dissemination is expected. 

Ideal candidate will have:

  • outstanding academic credentials with a PhD in a related social, political, policy, or computer science;
  • a personal research agenda that compliments the substantive research interests of CMCS faculty and staff colleagues;
  • a passion for multi-method research on data, media and society and experience managing such research;
  • experience with social media, managing research teams or coordinating distributed networks of researchers;
  • ability and experience in identifing funding sources, developing research bids, and working with researchers to maximize the impact of their research.
