Monroe Price Receives the 2015 International Communication Distinguished Scholar Award

Professor Monroe Price, co-founder and former Chair of our Center, and member of the CMDS Advisory Board, has been the recipient of this year’s International Communication Distinguished Scholar Award. The recognition is presented on an annual basis at the International Studies Association Annual Meeting to a scholar whose work has made a substantial impact in the area of international communication in the context of international studies.The 2015 Distinguished Scholar Award recipient, Monroe Price was selected not only for his exemplary scholarship, but for his mentorship of new and emerging scholars of international communication from around the world.

Professor Price is the Director of the Center for Global Communication Studies (CGCS) at the Annenberg School for Communication, and the Joseph and Sadie Danciger Professor of Law and Director of the Howard M. Squadron Program in Law, Media and Society at the Cardozo School of Law. He directs the Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research in London, and is a member of CMDS’ Advisory Board.

He has published many foundational books on international communication, including: Television, The Public Sphere and National Identity (1995); Media and Sovereignty: The Global Information Revolution and Its Challenge to State Power (2002); The Routledge Handbook of Media Law (2013); and recently, Free Expression, Globalism, and the New Strategic Communication (2015).

In addition to his scholarly contributions, he has helped to found multiple centers and institutes dedicated to the study of international communication around the world, including CMDS, the Stanhope Centre for Communications Policy Research at City University in London; the Squadron Program in Law, Media and Society at Yeshiva University’s Cardozo School of Law (where he served as Dean for nine years),  the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy at Oxford University, and the Moscow Center for Media Law and Policy Studies.

Professor Price graduated magna cum laude from Yale, where he was executive editor of the Yale Law Journal. He clerked for Associate Justice Potter Stewart of the U.S. Supreme Court and was an assistant to Secretary of Labor W. Willard Wirtz.
