Marius Dragomir to Participate in the IPI World Congress
Our Director Marius Dragomir will discuss journalism and philanthropy as well as media capture at the 2021 World Congress of the International Press Institute.
The IPI World Congress will take place in Vienna, Austria and online on 15-17 September 2021. The hybrid event will bring together a global network of journalists, editors and publishers to discuss how to advance, protect and sustain a journalism that informs communities, makes sense of the world, and holds power to account.
Dragomir will moderate a discussion, together with ERSTE Foundation’s Maribel Königel, on how philanthropy can help sustainable media financing. The special round table will bring together European donors and beneficiaries on philanthropic funding of media and journalism. How does a sustainable future of news media look like? Can trust, credibility, and independence be (re-)earned by structural funding through foundations and what are the specific needs of investigative journalism, culture journalism and solution-based journalism? The event will be in-person on 16 September.
CMDS recently held an online roundtable discussion on media and philanthropy, the recording of which you can check out here.
On 17 September, Dragomir will join Beata Balogová (editor-in-chief, SME, Slovakia), Paweł Ławiński (editor-in-chief, Onet, Poland), Márton Gergely (editor-in-chief, HVG, Hungary), and freelance journalist Boryana Dzhambazova (Bulgaria) to discuss media capture in Central Europe. They will talk about possible strategies for independent media and journalists in the face of media capture, the domino effect of the Hungarian model and the failure of democratic Europe to stand in its way.
