The UK Media Influence Matrix Report Launched in the UK Parliament
The UK Media Influence Matrix report has been launched in the UK Parliament along with the Media Reform Coalition’s Manifesto for a People’s Media.
The launch included an online presentation of the UK Media Influence Matrix report by the researcher Leo Watkins and the Manifesto for a People’s Media by Debs Greyson. The presentations were followed by a discussion.
Leo Watkins provided an overview of the report, explaining the three parts in detail. The first part of the report, on government, politics and regulation covers the main areas of UK media law, a recent history of media regulation, the 2010s battle over the press regulation in the UK and an account of how the main regulations work.
The Funding Journalism report provides detailed information on news consumption in the UK based on data from Ofcom and the Reuters Journalism Research Institute. It explores how sources of funding are changing, pointing out that the shift in advertising revenue online has been a shift away from journalism towards Google and Facebook.
The Technology, Public Sphere and Journalism report offers a detailed look at technology use/internet use and at how the media policy agenda has been reoriented from regulating the press towards how to regulate the big tech platforms, seen as the cause of the major problems of UK media.
Before the launch, the Media Reform Coalition has produced a policy briefing on some of the key debates in UK media policy.
