Dragomir on Media Oligarchs in Ukrainian NV Magazine
CMDS Director Marius Dragomir talked to Ukrainian NV magazine about oligarchs controlling the media.
The article covers Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent attempt to limit the influence of oligarchs on politics, media and business. Aiming to create a public register of oligarchs, the Ukrainian President has recently introduced a draft bill that would outline the criteria on the basis of which a person can be labelled as oligarch.
In the article, Dragomir talks about how oligarchs in recent years have come to use the media as a main tool. Dragomir is quoted in the article as saying, “A whole class if oligarchs has emerged that is increasing control over the media in different countries and regions.” The list includes influential financial groups in Slovakia, Hungarian oligarch Lőrinc Mészáros and representatives of the Czech Republic such as the recently deceased Petr Kellner and Andrej Babiš, the country’s prime minister, Dragomir is reported as saying.
